HoD's Message
It is an honour to welcome the students who have chosen Islamic Studies in their journey towards higher education. The dynamic legacy of Islam requires a scholarly study, within such a framework that can emphasize the active interaction between its global religious tradition and the multiple milieus (social, ethical, and, historical) which form the basic components of its manifold structure. This challenging task is accomplished by the discipline known as Islamic Studies. It embodies a contemporary interdisciplinary approach of studying Islam that sheds light on the role of Islamic civilization on a trans-historical level and highlights the importance of Islamic Discourse in the modern world.
.
It is an integrated academic discipline that aims at the study of the revealed sources of knowledge (Qur’ān and Sunnah), the rich heritage of Islamic civilization (spiritual, intellectual, scientific, and social), modern developments in the Muslim world vis-a-vis the West, and above all, the Islamic moral, legal, economic, and human rights’ theories built on its universal, broad, and tolerant principles. Its international significance can be gauged from the fact that it is taught - as part of the faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences - in the leading universities of the world which include Harvard University Massachusetts, University of Cambridge, University of Oxford UK, International Islamic University Malaysia, McGill University Canada, Princeton University New Jersey, Columbia University New York, Temple University Pennsylvania, and Aarhus University Denmark, among many others. It also forms an integral component of the academic structure in some major universities of India like Aligarh Muslim University, Osmania University, Jamia Millia Islamia, and Maulana Azad National Urdu University.
.
Vision & Mission
In Jammu and Kashmir, Islamic Studies is taught in the University of Kashmir, IUST Awantipora, BGSBU Rajouri, and Central University of Kashmir, along with most of the Degree Colleges throughout the Union Territory. It was introduced in GDC Vailoo Larnoo in the 2011-12 academic session.
.
At UG level, apart from focusing on the core areas of the subject, we aspire to acquaint the students with skill enhancement courses like Disaster Management and Communication Skills from an Islamic perspective. By encouraging a deeper study of Islam in particular and other religions in general, this subject also endeavors to provide, among numerous educational benefits, a platform for research and a career in Islamic sciences based on sound academic principles. Students are also expected to comprehend the compact methodological paradigm whose subject matter is Islam itself in its contextuality and intertextuality, where the ideological and psychological underpinnings of the rise and fall of the Muslim civilization and its impact on other major civilizations is analyzed and evaluated. Islamic Studies encourages students and scholars to develop a wide and comprehensive overview of the history and intellectual interests of the Islamic Culture and that of its relevance and contribution in the making of the modern world.
